About

Hi, I'm Jan.

I'm a qualified 2nd Degree Reiki practitioner based in Durham, also offering Indian head massage, hand massage and foot massage. My aim is simple: a calm, unhurried space where you can switch off and leave feeling lighter than when you arrived.

Jan is fully insured to practise, so you can relax knowing you're in safe, professional hands.

Harmony in body, mind & spirit

What is Reiki?

A gentle, hands‑on energy practice

Reiki (say ray-key) is a calm, non-invasive therapy in which the practitioner rests their hands lightly on, or just above, the body. There is no massage or pressure, and you stay fully clothed throughout.

Where it comes from

Reiki was developed in Japan in the early 1920s by Mikao Usui. The name joins two Japanese words: rei, often translated as ‘universal’, and ki, ‘life energy’, the same idea as qi in Chinese practice.

It reached the West through Hawayo Takata in the mid-20th century. Today it's offered in wellbeing centres and some hospices and cancer-support services, alongside conventional care.

How it works

Reiki is based on the idea that the practitioner acts as a channel for life energy, supporting the body's own ability to relax and rebalance.

Practitioners train in stages. First Degree focuses on treating yourself and others in person. Second Degree, which Jan holds, deepens the practice and introduces the symbols used to focus a treatment.

What you might feel

Every experience is unique. People often describe a soothing warmth from the hands, gentle tingling, a pleasant heaviness, or drifting into a light, restful sleep.

Many leave feeling calm, refreshed and lighter, with a quieter mind they can carry into the rest of their day.

The forms a treatment can take

  • On the couchThe classic full treatment. You lie on your back (and front, if you like) with a pillow and blanket while Jan works through a sequence of hand positions from head to feet.
  • SeatedPrefer to sit? Reiki can be given just as beautifully in a comfortable chair.
  • Hands on or hands offTouch is always light and non-intrusive. If you'd prefer no contact at all, Jan can work with her hands just above the body. Just say.
  • Alongside massageReiki can sit well with an Indian head, hand or foot massage. Ask Jan about combining treatments in one visit.
Trusted and valued

Welcomed in hospices, care settings and everyday life

Reiki is offered as a complementary therapy in hospices, cancer-support centres and wellbeing services across the UK, where it's valued as a calm, caring space alongside the care people already receive.

People from all walks of life come to Reid Reiki: busy parents, carers, people in demanding jobs, and anyone who simply needs an hour to switch off. What they share is a wish to de-stress, rest and feel more like themselves, and that's exactly what Jan's treatments are here to offer.

A complementary therapy that works hand in hand with your usual healthcare.
